Charles "Charlie" Larue

June 2, 1932 — January 5, 2023

Charles (Charlie) Paul LaRue, peacefully passed away the morning of January 5th, 2023. He was born June 2nd, 1932, in St. Marys, WV, the son of Charley & Myrtle LaRue. After moving to Sistersville in 1944, he graduated from Sistersville High School in 1950 as a three-year letterman in football & baseball.

He graduated from Marietta College in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering. He was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity, the President of Pi Epsilon Tau, (a national honorary petroleum fraternity), and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national honorary leadership fraternity.

In 1954, the Wiser Oil Co. hired him as a Petroleum Engineer, and soon after, he married his high school sweetheart, Gretta Gay Guyton (1932-2009).  They had three children; Jon L. LaRue, Ph.D., wife Ann - Tulsa, OK; Catherine LaRue Black, M. Ed., husband Greg - Butler, TN; and Elizabeth M. LaRue, Ph.D. - Pittsburgh, PA. In addition to his children, Charlie is survived by his three children; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

He served in the U. S. Army from 1956 to 1958, and upon discharge was re-employed by The Wiser Oil Co. in Winchester, KY.  Wiser returned him to Sistersville in 1969 where he served as Vice- President of Wiser, and President of Peoples Gas Co. of KY.  He retired in 1993.  And he was known to play some decent golf occasionally.

Charlie was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church for more than 30 years, where he served as Deacon, Trustee, and Treasurer. Being civically minded, he contributed to the Sistersville community by serving as President of the Tiger Booster Club, President of the AlumniAssociation, President of Sistersville Country Club, and served one term on the City Council.  He was a director of The First Federal Savings and Loan Bank, and a member of several Oil & Gas Associations in the United States.

He was indeed a member of the Greatest Generation and will be missed. All are welcome to the brief graveside ceremony held on Friday, January 13, 2023 at 11:00 am at Greenwood Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made via check mailed to Journey Hospice, 314 S.
