Helen Springer Haught, 101, and a life-long resident of Sistersville, passed away suddenly on March 10, 2012 at Sistersville General Hospital. She was born September 27, 1910 in Sistersville, the sixth child of Alonzo George and Joberta Henderson Springer. She attended Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy and graduated from Sistersville High School in 1929. Throughout her life, Helen was interested in sports. In 1929, she set three basketball records at Sistersville High School when she scored 38 points in a single game, finished the year with 238 total points, and averaged 17 points per game. Helen’s records were not broken for over 50 years. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, Helen worked for Springer’s Restaurant owned by her family. Also in the 1960’s, she managed the local Sistersville swimming pool and taught many of the community children how to swim and lifeguard. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, Helen worked in various positions at the Wells Inn in Sistersville. In September 2010, Mayor Dave Fox proclaimed September 27, 2010 as Helen Springer Haught Day in Sistersville in recognition of her 100th birthday. Helen was a charter member of Sistersville Hospital’s Chinaberry Twig and a member of the Order of the Eastern Stars and First Baptist Church in Sistersville. She is survived by her daughter, Joberta Haught White of Sistersville; her son, Jack Ellsworth Haught (Debbie) of North Myrtle Beach, SC; four grandchildren, Jo Lynn Burns (Barry) of Vienna, WV, Tonia Sue Harris (Donnie) of Springfield, MO, Jackie Lynn Bookwalter (Travis) of Proctorville, OH, Michael Jack Haught (Leigh) of Springfield, MO, 12 great-grandchildren, Justin Hatcher, Jillian Sanchez, Dru and Lauren Burns, Amanda, Jessica and Katelyn McCoy, Camryn Bookwalter, Sarah and Audra Harris, Ella Haught and Bailey Woodworth, two great great-grandchildren, Gunnar Sanchez and Autumn Hatcher; three nephews, Larry Bradfield of Marietta, OH, William Springer of New Cumberland, WV, Jack Springer, Jr. of Arlington, VA; two nieces, Joan Hadley of Sistersville, Margie Jo Poole of Statesville, NC and sister-in-law Wanda Springer of Statesville, NC, and her loyal primary caregivers Darlene Beaver, Dottie Perrine, Linda Ash, Joyce Schmenk and Delores Billiter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Ellsworth Haught who passed away February 5, 1971, son-in-law, Jack L. White, four brothers, George, Bill and Jack Springer, and infant brother, Bruce; five sisters, Virginia Herwig, Mary Springer, Betty Richards, Margaret Bradfield and Patty Silk, and one nephew, Walter “Skip” Bradfield. Friends will be received Wednesday, March 14, 2012 from 2-4 & 6-8 at Myers Funeral Home in Sistersville. Services will be held Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Evangelist Jerry Toothman and Reverend Judy Vetter officiating. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
