Mary Ann Shepherd

Mary Ann Shepherd, 49, of Sistersville, WV, passed away November 30, 2021, six days short of her 50th birthday.Her loving sister, Jan, was by her side. She was born December 6, 1971, in Sistersville, WV, a daughter of the late Jerry and Peggy Shepherd. Mary Ann loved Sistersville and its people, and she was very well known and loved by most of the town.If she ever met you, she likely asked about your birthdate, and until a few years ago probably remembered that date. Mary Ann had Down Syndrome.She began her education with speech therapy services at Easter Seals in Wheeling, which her mother drove her to three times a week for several years.At school age, she attended St. Marys Elementary School in St. Marys, WV, until she transferred to Sistersville Elementary's new special needs program.Mary Ann received a modified diploma from Sistersville High School in 1990, and always made sure to tell you she "graduated." She had a remarkable, wonderful life.She loved to travel across the country and into Mexico and Canada with her parents.She spent large chunks of time in Florida and Texas, and also Georgia with her sister, Barb for vacations.She went on sister trips with her three sisters until recent years.She was even in the audience of "The Price is Right" in California. After the death of her parents, Mary Ann had her "own place" with Mike and Jan Wells on Oil Ridge for 5-1/2 years.She spent her last 14 months living in Marietta, OH at a personal care facility for patients with Alzheimer's.Mary Ann loved swimming, especially being under water longer than most people could survive.She loved dancing and had great rhythm.She loved going for side by side rides throughout Tyler County and she adored dogs, babies and her siblings. She is survived by eight older siblings, Debbie Hisam (Gary who passed away in 2018) of Friendly, WV, Barbara (Larry) Howlett of Augusta, GA, Bill (Janet) Shepherd of Bridgeport, WV, Jan (Mike) Wells of Sistersville, WV, Tom (Kelly) Shepherd of Newport News, VA, Jerry (Lorie) Shepherd of Carrollton, VA, Jim Shepherd of Hampton, VA and Dave (Catherine) Shepherd of Evans, GA In addition to her parents, Jerry Shepherd in 2017 and Peggy Shepherd in 2012, she was preceded in death by her infant brother, Edward Shepherd in 1967. Visitation will be Friday, December 3, 2021 from 11:00 am until time of funeral service at 2:00 pm at Myers Funeral Home with Reverend Andrew Tennant officiating.
