Opal "Marie" Nash

May 15, 1935 — November 27, 2023

Opal “Marie” Nash, 88, of Middlebourne, WV, passed away on November 27, 2023 at Wetzel County Hospital.

She was born May 15, 1935, at home on Muddy Creek, WV, to the late Kershel Anderson and Opal Sole Anderson.  She and her siblings were raised by their maternal grandparents, James C. Sole and Innie Baker Sole, on Gorrell’s Run, just a few miles from Middlebourne, WV.

Marie was a member of the Gorrell’s Run Church of Christ.  She enjoyed many things, such as quilting and sewing, gardening and canning and working outdoors.  She was always the organizer of cook-outs and gatherings with family and friends and she enjoyed working on the family genealogy.  Her genealogy took place without the benefit of the internet and required many hours in libraries hand-copying information.  She also met with older family members to gather information.

Marie attended elementary school at the one-room school house on Gorrell’s Run and graduated from Tyler County High, Class of 1954.  After school on Friday’s, she would walk thru the woods to the old “County Home” to help her Aunt Gay and Uncle Ira Sole, the last caretaker of the “County Home”.  She would spend her weekends there, helping her Aunt Gay clean and cook meals for the residents.

After graduation, Marie held several jobs including; working in the Food Service Department at the Mayo Clinic in Cleveland, OH; at the P&W Bus Terminal in Weirton, WV and Poole’s Restaurant in Sistersville, WV.

In 1953, Marie met the love of her life, William S. Nash, and they were married on October 1, 1955, at the home of her grandparents.  She chose to be a “stay-at-home” mom to her four children, a full-time job in itself.  After raising her children, Marie worked at Doak’s IGA as a cashier and as Produce Manager; at Witschey’s Market in New Martinsville as Bakery Manager; and she was also employed as a motel clerk at one time and did some “in-home care” for Senior Citizens, which she enjoyed very much.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, William “Bill” Nash of Middlebourne, WV; daughter, Brenda (Bill) Duke of Sistersville, WV; sons, Randy (Diane) Nash, Rodney (Candis) Nash and Roger (Lesli) Nash, all of Middlebourne, WV; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Charles (Doris) Anderson and sister, Pauline (Fred) Ball.

A Celebration of Life will be held on December 16, 2023 from 12-3 pm at the Log Building at the Tyler County Fairgrounds.  Family and friends are invited to attend as we celebrate a life well-lived.  Interment will follow at Alf Smith Cemetery.
