Woodrow L. Hammond, 90, of Sistersville, W.Va., passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at Wetzel County Hospital. He was born Feb. 24, 1918, in Pennsboro, W.Va., a son of the late John and Mary Ferrell Hammond. He worked 34 years for W.Va. Department of Highways. He was a World War II Army veteran in the 1st Cavalry Division and was awarded the Purple Heart. He is survived by sons, Roger Hammond of Clarington, Ohio, and Kenneth Hammond of Sistersville, Pursley Community, W.Va.; sister, Opal Yonley, of Parkersburg, W.Va.; four granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Olive E. Wagner Hammond; brothers, Foy Hammond and Forrest Hammond; and sisters, Loy Skeels, Dorotha Hammond and Nellie Whitehair. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009 at the Myers Funeral Home, 600 Main Street, Sistersville, WV with Evangelist Homer Matthews officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Sistersville. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
